COMPANY
In 1981 the Viennese choreographer Manfred Aichinger founded the company homunculus. The ensemble has lived through many different phases of development and change, constantly searching for new challenges. The choreographies of homunculus are the consistent work of the ensemble, variety in issues and concepts as well as the coming to terms with the relevant questions of the politics of society. The performances are developed through intensive improvisation involving the choreographer and the dancers. As Art Director, Aichinger has created many choreographies for his ensemble. Such as Galerie der Irrtümer (1985), Glückliche Tage (1988), und doch tragen sie den Winter in den Köpfen (1990), Schlachthof für Engel (1992), nature morte (1998), GATE 7 (2000) and Alles gelogen (2003). Manfred Aichinger has worked as a guest choreographer with the ballet of the opera in Graz, the Landestheater Salzburg, the Landestheater Tyrol and the Vienna State Opera.

The list of works by homunculus includes 43 choreographies and numerous short works. The ensemble has performed in Russia, Cyprus, Serbia and Germany. In Vienna debut performances were held at the Volksoper, the TQW, the Kosmostheatre and in the WUK.

Since the season 2002/03 homunculus has been inviting guest choreographers. So far debut performances have been presented by Nikolaus Adler, Bernd R. Bienert, Nicole Caccaivio, Elena Luptak and Andrea Stotter.

homunculus is developing regular dance theatre for a young audience under the artistic direction of Karin Steinbrugger. The purpose is to support the interest in dance and theatre, the reduction of fears of modern dance, as well as dealing with issues of conflict and discussing them. A young audience should experience theatre as a place of an active and critical dialog with society and the issues of our time.

homunculus also makes a significant contribution in supporting young dancers and choreographers.

homunculus theatrical works are subsidised by the cultural department of Vienna and the BMUKK.
